Surprising noone who saw him play over the last few games, Alex Ovechkin was named the first star of the week. After posting a pair of three-point performances, Ovie proved why he piles up the hardware.

As the reigning league MVP, it’s looking like Ovechkin may be setting things up for another year of greatness that few can match. At just 24 years of age, he is perhaps the most skilled and most dangerous player in the NHL and one of the best we’ve seen in years. Watching him control the play and move the puck is a thing of beauty.

With the season still new and fresh, it’s hard to say with any certainty that Ovechkin will ride into the sunset with yet another MVP trophy, but it’s also hard to deny the possibility after watching him skate over the last few days.

Barring injury, I daresay Ovechkin is a shoe-in for the MVP prize. The only question that remains is if his Capitals are strong enough to help him shoulder the load. With key performances from Nicklas Backstrom and Alexander Semin supporting him, Ovechkin’s chances of going deep into the post-season this year are looking good.

Things are looking great for hockey in Washington again and, thanks to Ovechkin, one can safely call themselves a Capitals fan without waiting for the barrage of tomatoes and laughter.
