One Angry Leaf Fan – My Father

I sat with my father watching the Toronto Maple Leafs last night. Our turkey meal was just settling and before you knew it the Leafs were down 2-0 to the New York Rangers.

Even my wife tried to ease the night of sadness with offers of pumpkin pie. My father politely declined (surprise to us) and claimed, “He was too angry to eat”.

It is hard to see my father who has watched the Maple Leafs for at least 50-60 years deal with the product on the ice this year. We continued to watch the game unfold to a blow-out, which is when I think my father came to his senses and realized he was passing up pumpkin pie: “Ok, I will have a slice.” This seemed to please him in a way the Leafs could not.

I have always enjoyed talking to my father about our beloved Maple Leafs, the stories, memories and what the future has in store for Toronto. After my father went home I started to think about the current Toronto Maple Leafs and why fans are angry like my father was earlier that night.

Brian Burke Assessment for 2009/10

As noted I like Brian Burke. The only downfall was his indication that the Toronto Maple Leafs were a playoff team. Whether they are a playoff team or not, you have to wonder what happened to the rebuild program. By indicating to Toronto fans that this is a playoff team, we believe it.

Vesa Toskala – Our #1 Goalie

Toskala was fully healed from his surgeries and would put a better performance on the ice. We all know what has happened to this point of the season for Toskala.

Phil Kessel – The trading of our future

Now, I liked the deal for Phil Kessel and it seems most of the Toronto faithful were accepting of it. The draft picks given away for Kessel will always be debated by Toronto fans until we find out where they end up in the standings.

Defence – Best in the League

Various articles I read before the season started pegged the Leafs defence as one of the best in the NHL this year. Not everything sits on Toskala’s shoulders, as the defence has been horrible.

These are only some of the issues being brought up and ultimately the responsibility is on the players to be better on the ice. Keep the faith, Leaf fans, as soon the turnaround of the Toronto Maple Leafs and the horrible start to the season, will be a distant memory.

At least for the sake of my father!

I’m beginning to find it harder and harder to tell people I’m still a Leafs fan. I believe Burke as much as I believe Bush. “Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.” A few years ago Bush screwed up this quote and I think this year Burke has screwed the Leafs and their fans.
