Thomas was traded to the Dallas Stars in exchange for goalie Dan Ellis just a day after Luongo was added to the Panthers’ roster, thereby ending the former’s insistence on helping rebuild the Florida club and commencing the latter’s job between the pipes without a considerable goaltending controversy.
Now it looks like Ellis will back up Luongo for the Panthers.
Upon hearing the news on Twitter, Luongo tweeted “NOOOO!!” and continued his run as one of the most amusing personalities in hockey.
Thomas, meanwhile, is a bit of a mystery when it comes to how he’ll fit with the Stars.
But the big story is the sad but necessary reality of not getting to experience the Thomas and Luongo sideshow. Clearly the Panthers knew they couldn’t have both ‘tenders under one roof, especially with Thomas’ comments last night.
“It looked like [Panthers GM] Dale Tallon went kicking some tires and found one that needed pumping,” Thomas said after losing to the Bruins on Tuesday. “It’ll be interesting. I don’t know how things are going to work out assuming I stay in Florida, it will be interesting. I’m looking forward to it. It’s going to be fun.”
Obviously the deal was meant to be made, with Thomas’ contract expiring after the season. And with the “fun” and “interesting” potential aside, the Panthers have to feel they made the right move.
