As we discussed yesterday, Logan Couture of the San Jose Sharks went down with an injury at practice. We now know what that injury is, as the team revealed that the centre broke his right leg.
Surgery is on the docket for Couture and he’s expected to miss four to six weeks as a result.
“Logan was injured in practice on Thursday in New Jersey and suffered a fractured right fibula at the ankle,” Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said. “He will be returning to San Jose to undergo surgery under the direction of Kaiser Permanente’s medical team. He is expected to miss four to six weeks.”
As we reported, Couture broke his leg during a five on five drill at practice on Thursday at the Prudential Center in New Jersey. The Sharks will play the Devils on Friday night.
As for Couture, he’ll have surgery on the leg this weekend.
“Quick thank you to everyone for kind words. I know the boys will hold it down. I’ll be back,” he said on Twitter.
Couture is a key piece of the San Jose Sharks team and his presence will certainly be missed for this extended period of time. An awful lot can happen in four to six weeks.
The Sharks have called up forward Nikolay Goldobin from the AHL and had him take part in the morning skate in New Jersey. The 20-year-old from Moscow is a natural goal-scorer and can hit that extra gear in the offensive zone, so San Jose could get a look at his explosive speed in the near future. If there’s a knock on Goldobin, and there is, it’s that he needs to get a little stronger.
San Jose may also look to Ben Smith to fill in, as he’s been a healthy scratch for the last three games.
Regardless of any bright side, it hurts to lose Couture like this. He’d been on the Sharks’ most productive line, skating between Patrick Marleau and Joel Ward. And he registered an assist with a plus-1 rating.
But the Sharks should be able to weather this storm and it could provide an opportunity for Smith or Goldobin. That’s a good thing, right?
