Kings: Doughty Agrees on Terms of Contract Extension

Defenceman Drew Doughty has agreed to terms on an eight-year contract extension with the Los Angeles Kings.

The contract cannot be signed until July 1.

The blueliner has a year to go on his current NHL contract, which was also an eight-year deal. That contract was signed in 2011 and paid out $7 million a year.

The new deal for the 28-year-old looks to be worth just shy of $11 million a year, according to Sportsnet’s John Shannon.

“Drew Doughty is one of the best defencemen in the world and we are obviously excited to have reached this point in the process in which he has committed to the Kings long-term,” Los Angeles general manager Rob Blake said. “This is great news for our organization and our fans and we will comment further once the contract has been signed and formally announced.”

The Kings are in the process of a re-imagination of sorts, with the signing of Ilya Kovalchuk making things interesting.

In 2017-2018, Los Angeles qualified for the post-season in the second wild card spot. They were swept in the first round by the Vegas Golden Knights, however, and many analysts saw the club exposed for a lack of speed.

Doughty was drafted by the Kings second overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. He’s a two-time Stanley Cup winner and won the Norris Trophy in 2016. He’s also a three-time All Star.

“Rob Blake and Luc Robitaille, they took this job because they want to win and they want to transform this team into their winning ways again,” Doughty said after the season. “Whether or not they do a lot in the off-season, I don’t know, but we have these young guys coming up that I think are going to make a difference. I think that shows me how much potential we have in the future and I’m good with it and I’m happy to hopefully re-sign here.”

Doughty had 60 points in 82 games in the regular season but was held pointless in three playoff games. He hasn’t missed a regular season game in the last four seasons and led the NHL in total ice time for the third time in four seasons.

In 770 regular season games with the Kings, Doughty has 422 points.
