Because the party just won’t stop for the Ottawa Senators, head coach Guy Boucher was fired Friday and Marc Crawford was hired as the interim bench boss.
This is just the latest in a series of unfortunate events for the Senators, who’ve had yet another debacle of a week.
In the grand scheme of things, firing Boucher was always kind of one of those inevitable things teams do when they’re in the middle of a rip-roaring dumpster fire. It’s not surprising that the Senators went this direction, but what’s funny about it is the timing.
Is there any particular reason Ottawa couldn’t afford one person a little dignity on the way out? Is there any reason the Senators, last overall in perpetuity, couldn’t wait until the summer to cut the coach? With a handful of games to go in this repugnant season, is Crawford going to suddenly turn this vessel around and coast the club into the post-season?
“We just felt as recently as probably this morning Guy wasn’t going to be our coach moving forward,” said general manager Pierre Dorion. “For both parties we just felt it was time to move on. Obviously, we made the decision and that’s why we named Marc as interim coach until the end of the year.”
As recently as probably this morning.
At the trade deadline, if you can recall a whole four days ago, Boucher had a vote of proverbial confidence from his general manager. And now, as recently as probably this morning, that’s gone.
The general idea is supposed to be that the Senators’ loss to the Edmonton Oilers, a 4-2 joint, on Thursday night was the final straw. But how many final straws are there this season, really?
I mean, is this team actually supposed to win games? With most of their offence shipped out of town – Matt Duchene, Ryan Dzingel, Mark Stone – and a downtown plan for a new arena dumped in the trash after mediation failed between He Who Must Not Be Named and business partners, what’s supposed to happen here?
I guess Crawford, fresh from his third season as Ottawa’s assistant coach and luckily full of NHL experience, is about to find out.
