The San Jose Sharks have cleaned house, firing head coach Peter DeBoer along with assistant coaches Steve Spott and Dave Barr. Goalie coach Johan Hedberg was also fired.
Former Florida Panthers bench boss Bob Boughner was named the replacement for DeBoer on an interim basis. Roy Sommer and Mike Ricci will join Boughner’s staff as assistant coaches, while Evgeni Nabokov will serve as goaltending coach.
The move comes after a series of rough losses, with the toothless Sharks scoring just a single goal in each of their last three outings. They were trounced 7-1 at the hands of the Lightning on Saturday and ate a 5-1 loss handed to them by the Panthers a day later.
The DeBoer firing comes after a 3-1 loss to Nashville Tuesday.
The Sharks have yet to win a game in the month of December and the latest winless road trip, a four-game swing that began last Thursday in Carolina, was a debacle. San Jose scored just five goals in the entire run.
The Sharks are sixth in the Central Division and have returned home, where they’ll face the Rangers on Thursday and the Canucks Saturday.
San Jose is five points out of the second wild card spot in the Western Conference.
“When you have had a level of past success, change is never easy, but we feel this team is capable of much more than we have shown thus far and that a new voice is needed,” said general manager Doug Wilson. “As a team and as individuals, our play has not met expectations this year and our level of consistency has not been where it needs to be.”
Boughner had been serving as assistant coach for the Sharks following his tenure as head coach with the Panthers from 2017 to 2019. In 2017-2018, his Florida squad missed the post-season by a point.
Boughner has history with the Sharks. He was on the coaching staff in 2015 when they headed to the Stanley Cup Final. He is known especially for his flourishes with NHL defenceman, as he was one for 10 years and 630 games.
Sommer was most recently serving as head coach of the AHL’s affiliate Barracuda. He is the all-time leader in wins and games coached in the history of the American Hockey League. In the late 1990s, he was assistant coach of the Sharks under head coach Darryl Sutter.
Nabokov’s history as a goalie for the Sharks is well-known, but he was also putting in work with the Barracuda. He worked with development prospects in the system and also served as a scout and goalie development coach.
Ricci, another famous former Shark, has spent the last dozen years in development with both the Sharks and Barracuda.
