The NHL has postponed four games for the Minnesota Wild as five players were added to the COVID-19 Protocol list Wednesday.
Wednesday was not a great day for the league as the New Jersey Devils, Buffalo Sabres, Colorado Avalanche, and Pittsburgh Penguins also added names to the COVID-19 Protocol list.
New Jersey now has 17 players on the list, adding three Wednesday. The Sabres added two, while Colorado and Pittsburgh each added a player.
According to reports, 90 players have been added to the COVID-19 Protocol list since the start of the season three weeks ago. The league has now postponed 20 games during the 2020-2021 NHL season, with two postponed prior to its start.
Minnesota lost to the Avalanche Tuesday by a final score of 2-1. Four of the five Wild players named to the list skated in that game, with Marcus Johansson the exception. Defenceman Jared Spurgeon was injured and didn’t play in the third period, but he was also added to the list Wednesday along with Nick Bjugstad, Nick Bonino, and Joel Eriksson Ek.
Marcus Foligno was already on the list.
Colorado’s Tyson Jost was added to the COVID-19 list Wednesday.
This is somewhat reminiscent of the Devils and Sabres situation, with players from two teams that faced each other being named to the COVID-19 Protocol list.
The Wild would’ve played Colorado again Thursday ahead of a four-game homestand against the Arizona Coyotes and St. Louis Blues. Now, the Wild won’t play until February 11 against the Blues – at the earliest.
The NHL suspended the Sabres until February 8 at the earliest Tuesday, while the Devils were suspended until February 6 at the earliest Monday.
Nathan Bastian, Jesper Bratt, Connor Carrick, Aaron Dell, Nikita Gusev, Jack Hughes, Andreas Johnsson, Janne Kuokkanen, Michael McLeod, Kyle Palmieri, Damon Severson, Yegor Sharangovich, Ty Smith, Matt Tennyson, Sami Vatanen, Pavel Zacha, and Travis Zajac all appear on New Jersey’s COVID-19 Protocol list.
The Sabres now have Taylor Hall, Rasmus Ristolainen, Brandon Montour, and Tobias Rieder on the COVID-19 Protocol list.
