The Winnipeg Jets have picked up defenceman Jordie Benn in a trade with the Vancouver Canucks.
The Canucks receive a sixth round pick for the 2021 NHL Entry Draft.
The 33-year-old has nine points in 31 games this season.
The Victoria native was signed by the Dallas Stars as a free agent in July of 2011 after going undrafted into the National Hockey League.
Benn didn’t play major junior hockey and impressed the Stars following seasons in the ECHL and Central Hockey League. Dallas sent Benn to Texas in the AHL ahead of his NHL debut in January of 2012.
In 548 career regular season games for the Stars, Montreal Canadiens, and Canucks, the defenceman has 24 goals and 102 assists.
Benn’s best season to date was a 22 point campaign with the Canadiens in 2018-2019. He picked up five goals and 17 assists that season.
Benn has averaged 14:40 of ice time this season and gives the Jets good size on the blueline.
He’s not the most skilled defenceman in the NHL and doesn’t exactly give Winnipeg the top four guy they’ve been seeking, but depth is important and he possesses some edge and veteran presence.
